Tata Metaliks believes that the larger purpose of a business is to serve society – through best value delivered to the stakeholders – which includes, employees, customers, investors, vendors and service providers and the community. While this also remains a fact that it is only by maintaining a strong company that it will be able to support its various community welfare activities. It is among those few companies in India, especially in the business of pig iron making, to adopt a triple bottom line performance reporting in its Corporate Sustainability Report.
The manufacturing units of Tata Metaliks are located at Kharagpur in West Bengal and Redi in Maharastra. It has brought about a difference in the true Tata tradition in the neighbouring areas of its plant. An area of 10 km radius is identified for its community development schemes.
The thrust areas are – health and hygiene, promoting employable skills to people and education.
Our community initiatives under health and hygiene have impacted more than 6000 persons till date. It organises health camps, blood donation camps, eye camps and nutritional camps for children every year. HIV AIDS Awareness Programmes are also conducted annually. The Company sponsors sporting events for the local people and clubs. It also carries out relief work for local people during flood.
The Organisation has practically adopted a school at Gokulpur near it's Kharagpur plant. This school has a strength of about 2000 students and is the only Higher Secondary School in the immediate vicinity. TML has built class rooms for the school, for the Shishu Shiksha Kendra and a space for kitchen, has helped replenish library, built laboratories for higher classes, donated computers and run free computer classes. TML has also sponsored the education of students who had shown exemplary performance in STD X and had shown willingness to pursue Science subjects for higher studies.
The Company has installed 25 solar lights on a stretch of 3 km and also helped construct a 3 km stretch of road. It has opened a ‘Sadbhavana’ Trust Account for the benefit of the inmates of the nearby villages, which helps them as and when needed.
The self-employment programme focuses to train people to become employed. It has given drivers’ training to 40 youths from neighbouring villages at Kharagpur with the aim to help them earn their livelihood. All these youths were chosen from families living below poverty line. It has trained 50 women from a neighbouring village to make earthen pots, which is sold. More than 25 youth from neighbouring villages have been trained for various skills at the Redi plant.
